On Nov. 25, a young teacher of our university published a Letter paper entitled ‘Aiming for fish-friendly hydropower plants’ in Science journal. (Vol 374, Issue 6571, DOI: 10.1126/science.abm8458) Jiangsu University is the only author affiliation of this article, and researcher Zhou Ling of our fluid center is the corresponding author.

Under the guidance of the goal of ‘carbon emission peak and carbon neutrality’, the proportion of new energy such as wind power and photovoltaic has increased significantly, and the safe operation of power grid is facing great challenges. Pumped Storage Power Station has unique advantages in peak shaving and frequency modulation. At present, it has become the essential technology of clean energy storage. How to reduce the eco-environmental problems caused by power station development and how to strengthen the protection of biodiversity (such as fish) have become a research hotspot at home and abroad. This paper systematically summarizes the technical advantages and application status of pumped storage power station, sums up the fish passing mechanism and common fish damage types of pump turbine, concludes the existing fish protection measures and methods, and calls for multi-disciplinary joint research based on mechanical engineering, hydrodynamics and biology to further strengthen the research and development of fish friendly pump turbine.
