Recently, the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education issued the List of Newly Established Key Laboratories of Universities in Jiangsu Province. The “Laboratory of High-End Marine Fluid Equipment and Intelligent Technology,” proposed under the leadership of Professor Zhang Desheng from the Fluid Center, has been approved as A Cultivation Site for National Key Laboratory (one of only three in Jiangsu province), becoming an important scientific research platform for our university to serve the national strategy of building China into a strong maritime country.

The laboratory is based at Jiangsu University and jointly established with Hohai University, Jiangsu University of Science and Technology, Jiangsu Goldwind Science & Technology Co., Ltd., and Hangzhou Water Treatment Technology Research and Development Center Co., Ltd. By integrating the disciplinary strengths of universities with the industrial resources of enterprises, the laboratory aims to build a collaborative innovation system that links industry, academia and research.

The laboratory will carry out research in four key directions:

1.high-efficiency utilization of marine energy and multi-energy complementary technologies, to support the large-scale development and utilization of marine energy in China;

2.long-distance transportation technologies for complex deep-sea multiphase flows, to break through key technical bottlenecks in deep-sea oil and gas development;

3.multi-field coupling technologies for offshore floating structures, to enhance equipment resistance to extreme sea conditions; and

4.digital twin technologies for intelligent marine fluid equipment, to promote intelligent management across the entire life cycle of such equipment.

The laboratory will focus on building a provincial innovation platform for basic research and technology incubation in marine fluid equipment, and on developing a multidisciplinary and cross-cutting innovation team with strong international competitiveness that is closely aligned with major national strategic needs.

It is reported that in this round universities in Jiangsu Province plan to add 59 key laboratories, including 3 national key laboratory cultivation sites, 39 provincial university key laboratories, and 17 provincial university key (construction) laboratories. As the first national key laboratory cultivation site in the field of marine fluid equipment among universities in Jiangsu Province, the laboratory will take interdisciplinary integration as a key breakthrough, leverage the strengths of Jiangsu University’s National Key Discipline of Fluid Machinery and Engineering (the only key discipline in China specializing in pumps and systems) and the National Research Center of Pumps, further deepen the integration of fluid machinery with strategic emerging marine industries, steadily advance basic theoretical research and the transformation of key technologies, and build a highland for scientific and technological innovation and talent training in marine fluid equipment—contributing “Jiangsu University Strength” to the implementation of the national maritime power strategy.
